June/July 2018 – France

Towards the end of June, we headed to the Correze region of France and a Gite near the town of Chamberet.  The town was about 25 km from where we have stayed on previous visits to the area and was rather more isolated (the track from the road to the gite was 500m) The views from the gite were stunning and we enjoyed brilliant weather for all but the last evening of our 8 day stay (more of that later)

We spent our days walking, repeating several of the walks from previous years which proved just as enjoyable.  We walked from the village of Eyburie, and the towns of Vigeois, Chamberet, Uzerche and Segur le Chateau.

The beautiful buildings in the towns set the scene for gorgeous countryside. The joys of walking in the area were the complete lack of people, well labelled foot paths, stunning views as well as the many animals we came across.

A weather warning was issued on our last full day so we finished our walking early and decided to pack the car ready for an early start the next morning. What a stroke of good luck as the storm was incredible, we lost the electricity supply and with that the water supply which was pumped from a spring and neither had been restored by the time we left the next morning.  Fortunately, we had candles and torches.  More of a problem was the number of trees that had blown down including one that just missed our gite and blocked the access track. Again we were fortunate as our landlord and his chain saw sorted that tree and another one that had also blocked the track. Further afield, many roads were blocked by trees and we had to take a diversion of several miles to get to the main roads when we left.  We had an email from our landlord to say that they got their electricity (and water) back after 24 hours!
We made excellent time to Caen after the shaky start and managed to get the afternoon ferry rather than the overnight one we had booked.

Another great holiday!
