4 to 8 June 2013 – Devon

What 270-20130606.jpga joy the last 4 days have been.  We have been camping and walking in Devon in the most perfect walking weather possible.  We stayed 3 miles north of Tavistock on our usual campsite at Harford Bridge – they even gave us the same pitch!!!

We did several walks including 2 regular walks.  The first Dr Blackall’s Drive which is a lovely varied walk along a ridge and then a descent through woods to the river bank before climbing up through more trees and across open fields and then a trek across Dartmoor.  The walk held its usual magic plus we weren’t cold or wet!!

The270-20130608b.jpg same could be said for the other standard walk to the church on top of Brent Tor.  Not only did we enjoy good weather, the views were fantastic with no cloud or mist to reduce the distance we could see.  The church is 1000ft above sea level and quite a steep climb up from the nearest road (there is no decent track).  Despite the obvious logistical problems, Evensong is sung every Sunday during the summer (unless the weather is too bad).

One thing we noticed this year more than in the past were the number of Bluebells and the beautiful hedgerows, Rhododendrons and Camellias.  The splashes of colour really put a spring in our step (well for the first few miles anyway).

After 3 solid days of walking we enjoyed a meal at the local Mary Tavy Inn with Annie’s sister, Pam, and her husband Neil who had driven from their home in Holsworthy.  The Mary Tavy Inn has become a favourite of ours for the quality of the food, the reasonable prices and the lovely welcome we are given.  Drop in if you are ever down that way I doubt you will be disappointed.

Despite perfect weather for most of the time it did rain on our last night but not a lot and we were able to pack the tent up dry!  If you like, the final bonus on a great few days.
